Interventional Cardiology is the subspecialty of cardiology dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease using catheters . Interventional procedures involve introducing a catheter through an artery in the leg or arm, unlike traditional surgery that involves open wounds. The therapeutic procedure is performed through the catheter. Cardiac catheterisation can accurately diagnose diseases of the heart arteries. It can determine significant obstructions and is used to determine the extent and severity of the disease. Thus, the information provided by this test is essential to understanding the importance of heart disease and to decide the most appropriate treatment to each patient's specific problem . The emergence of new devices, especially coronary stent (a stent is a wire mesh that is mounted on a balloon , which is inserted into the artery of the heart through a catheter similar to that used for diagnostic catheterization ) allows many patients to be treated, when possible, and is as effective, but less aggressive and more comfortable, as cardiac bypass surgery . Since this type of procedure does not involve open heart surgery is considered minimally invasive .
